• How to get free transcriptions (not clickbait, not promoting)

Anyone here using Audacity? If you answered “No” then let me enlighten you, if you said “yes” then let me “blow yer hair back”!

Audacity is 100% free audio software. It’s not a full feldged Digial Audio Workspace (DAW) but it is a pretty decent way to edit audio. Currently it’s getting a much needed overhaul and they have recently added transcription, for absolutely free and gratis. Now, it means your training Intels AI voice models, but, it is free, so you pay for it somewhere amiright?

Anyway, the transcription plugin/module is from intel and once installed it does a pretty good job at turning your ramblings into “labels” which you can export as a time stamped text file. It also does it quite quicklly, an hour of transcription, of two people takes it about 10 minutes, or less.

We use it to transcribe our Business Oddcast podcast, and whilst it does require a pass through to tweak and tidy, it’s not 100% foolproof, it gives us a full transcript inside 45 mins end to end all done. Ofcom will be pleased!

Anyway, if you want to transcribe voice notes, phone calls, or other vocal musings then I have full detailed what to do here: https://businessoddcast.com/free-audio-to-text-transcription-guide-using-audacity/

Have a read and let me know your thoughts, and if you want any guidance feel free to ask!

      • Wow, Audacity, there’s a throwback… 🤯 Pretty cool they’ve invested in enhancing the tool from my early days of using it probably around 15 years ago! 😬😅 Thanks for sharing, @stu !

        • @adapt.patrick Yes, in internet terms it is quite dinosaur, 25 years old! I have been doing voicework for years and it’s perfect for anything you might wanna do in a home studio. I watched a presentation by the new MD about exactly how they are changing it, and why. It’s amazing the work they have done to drag it from where it was to give it a new fresh look and a brighter future. It’s worth a watch, just to hear him speak, so refreshing to hear someone without the cirporate PR bullshit. Here’s a link to 4:19 in, watch for a minute, it’s quite refreshing to hear: https://youtu.be/QYM3TWf_G38?t=259
