What to Do Next: Improving Culture, Trust and Performance
If this section scored low, it’s unlikely because you don’t care about people. More often, it’s because culture has been left implicit — assumed rather than designed.
In small businesses especially, culture doesn’t come from statements or workshops. It comes from how decisions are made, how pressure is handled, and what behaviour is quietly accepted or challenged. When that isn’t named, people fill in the gaps themselves.
That’s when things start to feel inconsistent, even if intentions are good.
What this score usually means – you may recognise some of this:
- Values that exist in words, but not in everyday decisions
- People being unsure what “good” looks like beyond getting the work done
- Avoiding difficult conversations in the name of being kind
- Standards being held inconsistently, depending on mood or pressure
- You carrying more responsibility because trust hasn’t fully settled
This isn’t about having the wrong values. It’s about not making them operational.
What to focus on first
Pay attention to where you’re stepping in unnecessarily.
- Where do you feel you need to double-check, rework or smooth things over?
- Where are expectations unclear enough that you’d rather fix something yourself than explain it?
Those moments usually point to cultural gaps, not capability issues.
One practical thing to do this week
Choose one value you genuinely believe in, not one you think you should have.
Write a short note about:
- What that value actually looks like in practice.
- How it influences decisions.
- What behaviour supports it.
- What undermines it.
If you couldn’t point to real examples, it’s not yet part of the culture.
A mindset shift that helps
Culture isn’t about being nice.
It’s about being clear.
Clarity creates trust. Trust allows responsibility to be shared. That’s where performance comes from.
Why accountability matters here
Founders are often the last people to see the culture they’re creating, because they’re inside it.
Having somewhere to reflect on behaviour, expectations and leadership — with people who understand small business realities — makes it much easier to turn values into something that actually shapes how work gets done.
