Who is your marketing actually aimed at?
Most founders I ask answer one of two ways.
Too broad: E.g. “Small businesses.” “B2B companies.” “Anyone who needs what we do.”
If it could be anyone, it speaks to no one.Narrow but generic: E.g. “SME founders in the UK.” “Marketing directors at mid-market companies.”
Better, but that’s a job title, not a person with a problem to solve. What…

All Members 7 weeks agoQuick question for small business owners and freelancers...
What’s the one task that takes up far more of your time than it should?
For me, I hear the same answers regularly:
• Admin
• Marketing
• Chasing invoices
• Social media
• Finding new customers
• Wearing too many hatsRunning a business often means spending less time on the work you love and more time dealing with everything around it.
So I’m…

Morning Simon and everyone. I think finding new customers is my biggest challenge right now. If you’re in business long enough, there will be ‘churn’ of long-term customers and this happened to me last year, leaving a significant gap. It’s a difficult marketplace out there, which doesn’t make it any easier. Admin also takes a lot of time…

The number one, time consumer historically for me is getting the client to make up their mind. If you only have red, green and blue, they will tell you “but I really like rose pink”.
The second you try to be generalist, is the same second you’ll attract the undecided.

IT'S A WRAP!
Phewww – been a hot day, for @Hannah and I recording the welcome video for our Neuroinclusive Workplace Circle, whilst hot it went well. Despite nature, the local “yoof” and every power tool known to mankind was used. As for lorries backing up… BEEP BEEP BEEPING BEEP… sorry about the bad language there…
You waanna see it when it is edited…

Yes, that is an old step ladder… It’s not a proper production unless you’re using an old step ladder for a mic stand… I hear Scorsese swears by his trusty steps and Speilberg won’t consider turning over unless he can see a step ladder in the shot. Go rewatch Jaws, didn’t you think it was odd that the boat had a step ladder???

I once lost a very good customer, who was also a friend of my Father in Law. Big customer. Early days of business. One call. GONE. It really stang, and I RAGED! HARD. Was in full flow, and my business partner at the time was with me when I got that call asked me what had happened. I explained. His reply changed my viewpoint forever. He asked…

Your Marketing Strategy on a post-it note.
Can you write your marketing strategy in one sentence. If you can’t get it on a Post-it, your team probably can’t act on it either.
I’ve been asking founders this for years and the answers fall into three rough buckets:
- Confident, specific, repeatable — “We help [X type of business] do [specific outcome] through [specific channel]”
- Vague — “We…

As a new business we are struggling big time with honing in on our ‘post-it note’ description of what it is we’re offering. After an initial consultation the customer gets it but that killer phrase that really makes the point?.. we don’t have one…yet.
Great post – you’re so right – its important. I appreciate knowing straight away…

Josephine, that’s a really common pattern and, honestly, the gap between “I can explain it in 20 minutes” and “I can say it in one sentence” is usually where the real work sits. And it’s more about being honest with yourself about who you’re best for and what specifically shifts for them rather than any cutsie copywriting.
If you want to think… Read more1 - View more comments
